Hammer Residences, Inc., provides cost-effective living arrangements for adults with developmental disabilities and related conditions. Through its programs, Hammer helps create stable, secure home environments that deeply enrich the quality of life for many families. Approximately 140 people in the Twin Cities metro area of Minnesota, USA, have called Hammer "home" for more than 25 years.

Barbara Tuckner has served as a volunteer for Hammer since 1990. Her disabled sister Janet has lived in a group home setting since 1978 or her entire adult life. Barbara has participated in focus groups, served on the organization’s program committee, and supported organization development projects as needed.

University of Minnesota Women’s Philanthropic Circle was created in 2001 by a dedicated group of alumnae from the College of Education. A first circle of its kind in the USA, this group’s vision is to bring women together and solicit gifts that, when combined, will make a difference for women and women's leadership in education. This circle hopes to educate and model philanthropy in ways that honor women and makes sense for them personally and financially.

As one of the original founders and supporters of the Circle, Barbara served on the steering committee.

University of Minnesota Alumni Association has more than 57,000 members, representing nearly 370,000 living alumni of the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota, USA. This association serves alumni and the University of Minnesota as an independent nonprofit association, governed by a volunteer board of directors.

Representing the College of Education, Barbara served on this national board and provided organization development services on the personnel committee.
